Gastric Acid Prevention Tips - continued :
The following to be considered for reducing gastric acid reflux symptoms.
- Avoid eating while watching TV or reading. Because this causes lack of concentration while eating and as a result, excessive consumption of food.
- Chewing food completely and slowly.
- Eating food in small quantities and more often. (Primary recommendations should focus on meal size and content. Smaller meals are less likely to cause reflux than larger meals. Bulky, high-fat meals delay gastric emptying, increasing acid production. Avoid consuming such foods, especially before going to bed .
- Avoid consuming meat fat, chicken and fish skin, white sauces, butter, cream, cream sweets, fatty foods and foods fried in oil.
- All foods should be boiled, steamed or grilled as much as possible.
- All dairy products should be low fat.
- Avoid excessive consumption of sour fruit juices such as citrus fruits, acidic foods (such as vinegar, lemon juice), spicy foods (including pepper) and mint as much as possible. Also, avoid consuming any food that the patient has found to aggravate his reflux. (If citrus fruits are removed, vitamin C supplement should be used to prevent deficiency)
- Avoid carbonated drinks, alcoholic drinks, strong tea, coffee, chocolate, cocoa, garlic, onions and chewing gum.
- Avoid drinking liquids (water and other drinks) while eating. You can consume the fluids you need between two meals.
- The consumption of fruits and vegetables in the daily diet should be enough to avoid constipation that can help to aggravate the reflux disease.
- Avoid lying down for at least 2-3 hours after eating. When sleeping, the head should be in a higher position than the body. Avoid bending and straightening a lot, especially after eating. (Elevating the bed by 6- 8 in is recommended for those who have nocturnal reflux.)
- Dinner should be consumed at least 3 to 4 hours before sleep.
- Avoid wearing tight clothes, especially after eating, which can aggravate reflux.
- Losing weight in case of overweight (obesity is one of the factors of gastroesophageal reflux disease, because it increases the pressure inside the stomach )
