What is Acid reflux or GERD

Stomach Reflux is a condition in which the lower esophageal sphincter ( LES ) (the muscular ring at the lower end of the esophagus) is abnormally relaxed and allowing the stomach corrosive contents to back up or ' reflux ' into the gullet (esophagus). This condition is also called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease ( GERD ). The regurgitated liquid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus as the lining of the esophagus does not share the same resistant features of stomach and acid can damage it.

Acid reflux pain is also known as Heartburn. It is a condition in which burning sensation you feel when stomach acid comes in contact with the tissue of the esophagus.

GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) is generally a more chronic condition where you have continuous symptoms, like heartburn that occurs frequently two or more days in a week, or damage to the esophagus.

The acid in the stomach that assist in digestion, is a mixture of hydrochloric acid, potassium chloride and sodium chloride. This mixture is produced by the cells of the stomach to digest food. Most of secretions are triggered when the stomach is full. This is the reason why it is so important in treating acid reflux to have small, frequent meals rather than consuming three big meals daily.

As a matter of fact the digestion process begins in the mouth with chewing and swallowing. Saliva helps to break down starches before food ever reaches the stomach. As you swallow, the LES opens up allowing those contents to reach your stomach. Once those contents reach your stomach, strong acids and enzymes called gastric juice begin to produce in the stomach in order to aid in food digestion. LES acts as a non-return valve to close once food is passed through esophagus and moved into the stomach.

The situation generally arises when this valve which is supposed to separate the stomach contents from the esophagus does not function in the ideal manner . It allows the contents splash back into esophagus and cause acid reflux and GERD symptoms. It is a common condition and can be found in both adults and children. The gastric reflux disease generally affects the normal daily activities and also causes lot of discomfort to the sufferer. Therefore it is imperative to find out what are acid reflux symptoms in order to control and treat the disease in proper manner.

Acid reflux, if left untreated, may lead to chest pain, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, sore throat and chronic coughing symptoms. However, with proper diet plan and other lifestyle changes, you can manage to control the symptoms.
